When the cavemen first discovered fire, it was the start of the Fire Age and a step towards progress. It lengthened the days, warmed the cold nights, kept the wild animals away, and cooked meat into something more palatable. Controlling fire and the light that it produced was the next step towards progress. Crude torches were made from dried wood and twigs.
